Last night, a dancer friend of mine had one of her highest earning nights ever. On a Sunday. Yes, she found one great customer, but she had been in the VIP room several times before she discovered “the one” that evening. Why? Did she just get lucky? Yes and no. Abraham Lincoln once said, “Luck is when preparation meets opportunity.” Have you ever heard of “an accident waiting to happen?” Well, this was “success waiting to happen.” Granted, this dancer has always had the capacity to be a top earner: she eats healthy food and exercises. She takes make-up classes and attends sales seminars. And she works in a club that caters to upscale clientele with a high earning potential. But what made this night different from every other night? I asked her…

First of all, she had gotten a full body massage 2 days in a row. And exercise. She claims “Massages clear my mind. Sometimes exercise does too, if I can get into the zone. They get my head in the right place.” She also brushed up on her sales skills by listening to a newly purchased self-help audio program as she was preparing to leave the house that particular evening. In the car on the way to work she “jammed” to her most recent favorite song downloaded off of Itunes. At the very end she added, “For the first time in weeks I was actually looking forward to going to work. I had just paid all of my bills and whatever I earned that night was going to be spending/saving money. The internal pressure to earn (in order to pay my mortgage) was low, but my motivation was high.”

So, that’s it in a nutshell. She always had the potential, but she needed to get her head in the right place. The million dollar question is “How?” If there is a new car you have been dreaming of… or a pair of shoes… or a house, then go ahead and fantasize. Visualize in your mind already having what you want. And start brainstorming ideas about how you can get yourself “into the zone.” Massages and exercises might not be the answer for everybody, but do things you enjoy– that you find relaxing and uplifting before you go to work. It could be anything from watching a favorite program on TV, to spending the day at the pool with your kids, to gardening. Because remember, your appearance gets your foot in the door. In order to go all the way, you need to have the right attitude. Of course, this is easier said than done, but it can open a goldmine of opportunities.
